Dean (Dr R.K. Sharma)
As of December 2012, Dr R.K. Sharma has been with Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Mauritius, for the better part of the year. In his capacity as Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and then as Dean of the Institute, he has been working to facilitate and enhance higher education in Mauritius.
Dr Rakesh Sharma is a Graduate of the IGMC, Shimla, H.P., where he had an illustrious academic career, and is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, where he earned his MD in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He served in the Indian Armed Forces and was with the Army Medical Corps for sixteen years. The Army service gave him both, diverse administrative experience and professional satisfaction.
In subsequent years, Dr Sharma went on to work closely with MGM Medical College, Navi Mumbai, India as Associate Professor, Professor & Unit Head in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He has also contributed to academia as Honorary Deputy Director of the Research Secretariat at MGM University. A keen teacher and mentor, he has successfully guided many postgraduate students, and has been an examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate medical examinations for various universities in India. His passion for clinical work and teaching continues to drive him to take a dedicated interest in training of PG students at our institution.
He has also shouldered the additional administrative responsibility of Medical Superintendent of the MGM Medical College Hospital and of the Municipal Corporation Hospital at Navi Mumbai.
Dr Sharma has been published in national and international journals, and has experience as Faculty and Speaker at various national and international academic conferences. He presently serves as Associate Editor of BIOINFO Obstetrics and Gynecology, an open access, peer-reviewed journal.
He is also a Founder Member of the Independent Ethics Committee for Research On Human Beings, Mumbai, India, and has reviewed over 200 national and international-level projects thus far. This has helped him to gain intricate knowledge of the field of research and its concerns and requirements. He is also involved with NGOs aimed at social development. He has been associated for long with the National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped (NASEOH), Mumbai, India, both as a Member and on the Governing Council.
